How to Setup ExtremeVPN on Synology NAS

To find your VPN credentials, visit the member panel of ExtremeVPN.

• Sign in to the Member area using your registered email address and password.

• On the subscriptions tab, you will see the VPN credentials by scrolling down.

• Check your login details from there.
• Note down your VPN username. To see your password, click on the Eye button. It will display your key to do manual configuration.

Here are the steps to set up PPTP on Synology NAS.

• Go to the Synology Control Panel and click Network from there.
• Click Network Interface to sign up for your VPN profile.
• Choose PPTP as the VPN connection and click Next.

• To configure a VPN profile, you must define the general settings outlined below.
• Profile name: Give a name to your profile, e.g., ExtremeVPN US.
• Type in the preferred server. Please utilize the provided server address listed down below:
  1. United Kingdom: ukl1.pointtoserver.com
  2. Netherlands: nl1.pointtoserver.com
  3. Germany: de1.pointtoserver.com
  4. Australia: au-sd1.pointtoserver.com
  5. United States: usil1.pointtoserver.com
  6. United States: ustx1.pointtoserver.com
  7. United States: usca1.pointtoserver.com
  8. United States: usfl1.pointtoserver.com
  9. United States: usny1.pointtoserver.com
  10. United States: uswdc1.pointtoserver.com
• Enter your login details.

• Once you are done adding it, click Next.
• It will take you to Advanced Settings, and you’ve to fill them as follows:
• For Authentication type, select MS-CHAP v2.
• For Encryption, pick Maximum MPPE (128-bit) from the drop-down menu.
• Mark check the following options only:
• Use default gateway on remote network.
• Reconnect when the VPN connection is lost.

• After doing this, confirm Apply.
• Now, it will display that your VPN profile is created. Click Connect to establish the VPN connection.

• You will see that the notification will switch from disconnected to Connecting.

• After connecting successfully, you will see a notification status. At this point, you will have access to various details, including the duration of your connection, your new IP address, and the amount of data transmitted and received.

• To terminate the connection, click Disconnect.

Follow these steps to configure L2TP/ IPSec on Synology.

• Synology Control Panel > Network > Network Interface tab. Click Create, then select Create VPN profile.

• Select L2TP/ IPSec from the new window that appears.

• Fill in the general settings of your VPN now:
• Profile name: Name your profile; for example, give a name based on your server or country.
• Type in the preferred server. Please utilize the provided server address listed down below:
  1. United Kingdom: ukl1.pointtoserver.com
  2. Netherlands: nl1.pointtoserver.com
  3. Germany: de1.pointtoserver.com
  4. Australia: au-sd1.pointtoserver.com
  5. United States: usil1.pointtoserver.com
  6. United States: ustx1.pointtoserver.com
  7. United States: usca1.pointtoserver.com
  8. United States: usfl1.pointtoserver.com
  9. United States: usny1.pointtoserver.com
  10. United States: uswdc1.pointtoserver.com
• User name: Type in your ExtremeVPN username.
• Enter your password in the password tab.
• Pre-shared key: Type 12345678 here.

• You should set the Advanced Settings of your VPN profile as follows:
• For Authentication type, select MS-CHAP v2.
• Check mark the following: “Use default gateway on remote network” and “Reconnect when the VPN connection.”

• Your VPN profile is created now. To connect, click on the button at the center.

• It will change the status of your VPN connection from Disconnected to Connecting.
• After a few seconds, you will be connected successfully to the location with a new IP.

• Go to the Synology Control Panel.
• Select the Network Interface tab.
• Tap Create, then Create VPN profile.

• Select OpenVPN (by adding a .ovpn file) and hit Next.

• It will display the list of all the locations available for OpenVPN.
• Select Linux Link, install, and run the zip file.
• Type in your profile name. Press the Browse button in front of the Import .ovpn file: and locate the file we got from the previous step. Add the ca.crt file in CA certificate available with the ovpn file. Hit Next.

• Turn on Use default gateway on remote network.
  You can also enable Reconnect when the VPN connection is lost. Click Apply.

• From the Network Interface menu, press Connect button by right-clicking your VPN connection.

• Once the connection is successful, you will see a notification status.

Connecting to your Synology from the Outside (WAN)
If you’ve selected Use default gateway on remote network, you may face problems connecting to your NAS over the internet.
To get secured, you need to check mark it.
If you want to use NAS over the internet, leave it unchecked. However, the connection can drop at intervals.

This is because the default gateway doesn’t redirect all requests within the private network over the VPN. It may ask you to connect to the VPN gateway’s (external) IP, but as it is a shared IP address, it drops the internet connection since the server does not know to whom to relay the information.
